“This scholarship program will provide support for research on topics related to the Holocaust and acts of genocide. It is a joint effort between the School of Arts and Humanities and the Holocaust Centre North (HCN). Scholarship recipients will not only gain valuable insights from the expertise of academic staff within the School of Arts and Humanities but will also have the opportunity to draw upon the academic and professional knowledge of HCN staff. They will be expected to collaborate closely with both the university and HCN.

“Holocaust Centre North (www.hcn.org.uk) is a prominent charitable organization dedicated to Holocaust remembrance and the only heritage institution of its kind located within a university campus in the United Kingdom. HCN is strongly oriented toward survivors, actively supporting research and educational initiatives related to both the worldwide and local Holocaust history. Within the extensive HCN collections, spanning from the 1880s to the present day, one can find a rich repository of audio and video testimonies, historical documents, research materials, correspondences, memorabilia, artifacts, and photographs.
The establishment of this scholarship serves as a tribute to the memory of Lilian Black OBE (1951-2020). As the Chair of the Holocaust Survivors’ Friendship Association, a charity based in Leeds, Lilian displayed unwavering dedication in founding Holocaust Centre North on the University of Huddersfield campus in 2018. Being the daughter of Holocaust survivor Eugene Black, who was liberated from Bergen-Belsen, Lilian’s tireless efforts in raising awareness about the consequences of hatred firmly established her as a prominent global educator on the Holocaust.”
MA by Research proposals may be related to any of the subject areas of the School of Arts and Humanities. Projects might, for instance, focus on:
- Visual histories of the Holocaust
- Post-war responses to the Holocaust
- Artistic responses to the Holocaust
- Histories of the Holocaust and survivors of the Holocaust
- Representations of the Holocaust (for example, fiction, life writing, media narratives, historiography, archive practices, digitisation)

Eligibility
Only domestic students are eligible for this scheme, which will fund three MA by Research students. A £2000 bursary and a complete fee waiver are provided by each scholarship. It is anticipated that students will start classes in September 2023.
Criteria and Further Details
The quality of the proposal, the viability of the suggested study, the availability of a qualified supervisory team, and the proposal’s compliance with the Scholarship scheme (as previously mentioned) will all be taken into consideration when evaluating applications. It is recommended that candidates get in touch with a prospective supervisor to talk about the suitability of their proposal.
Applicants using distance learning are not eligible for this program. In order to participate actively in the School’s research community, candidates must reside within commuting distance of the campus and regularly visit it.
Both full-time and part-time study options are available for the MA by Research. You must not be employed full-time and commit 35 hours per week to your degree if you are a full-time student. You should plan on dedicating 17.5 hours per week to your degree if you are a part-time student.
Recipients of scholarships will be required to perform 80 (unpaid) hours of work per year in order to support administrative, teaching, research, and public engagement. These hours might have something to do with work in HCN or the School of Arts and Humanities.
It is recommended that you create an MA or PhD project that can be finished in standard time, as the fee waiver is only valid for standard time. If you decide to take extra time for writing assignments or additional periods of time beyond your regular time, you will be charged at the appropriate rate when your research degree is finished.

Fill out the online application for a research degree in order to submit a formal application. Please select “Doctor of Philosophy” on the application form if you are applying for a PhD.
You’ll probably need to submit a 1000–2000 word research proposal for the majority of subjects. Please make sure you include all the necessary information in your research proposal by reading through our guidelines, if one is required for the degree you are applying for. To make sure you’re giving the correct information, it will be helpful to speak with your prospective supervisor at this point.
Be aware that your application may not be taken into consideration if your course requires a research proposal and you do not submit one with it.
