Phones are a part of our lives. We use it to make calls, send messages, read news, surf the internet, and connect with the world. Despite its endless benefits, your phones can pose a health risk. According to Cleveland Clinic, using your phone before bed (sleeping) has a negative effect on your health.

Sleep is very vital for healthy living and as such, it is important for you to get good quality sleep every night. It is recommended to get 7-8 hours of sleep per night. According to Cleveland Clinic, using your phone before going to sleep can affect your sleep quality and affect your overall health. Here are 3 reasons why you should quit using your phone before bed:

1.      Exposure to blue light

Your phone screen emits blue light. Not only your phone but devices such as tablets and laptops emit blue light. A lot of research has been done to uncover the link between blue light and sleep. Exposure to blue light before going to sleep can have a bad impact on the overall quality of your sleep. This is because the blue light emitted from your phone resembles daylight and this causes you to become alert at night.

Blue light has a negative effect on melatonin which is the hormone that controls your sleep cycle. Exposure to blue light can result in low melatonin levels and this can result in tiredness, insomnia, and irritability.

2.      Triggers emotions

Most times when we use our phones, we go on social media. Social media is packed with a lot of content. You can find contents that make you happy or make you sad. For some, social media increases anxiety and stress levels. if you are one of such people, then you should limit your phone use before bed. Coming across something on social media that triggers intense emotions can keep you awake and affect your sleep cycle.

3.      Your mind works non-stop

Using your phone before going to bed keeps your brain engaged and makes it work non-stop. While using your phone, your brain takes in and processes information non-stop and this can affect the quality of your sleep. Even after you are done using your phone, your brain still dwells on the information you consumed for a while. Using your phone before going to sleep engages your brain and makes it difficult for you to fall asleep.

Now that you know the effects of using your phone before going to bed, it is time for you to make a change to your habits. Doing so will improve the quality of your sleep and improve your overall health.
