The Hidden Dangers of Technology - Features - The Chemical Engineer

Technology has come such a long way in the past few decades, and it’s made life much easier and more convenient. But the convenience of technology comes at a price, and many people don’t even realize how their use of technology can be harming them. This article explores some of the dangers that come with using technology every day, how to combat those dangers, and why you should limit your exposure to technology if you can at all help it.

Mobile Phones
Phones are a bit of an addiction. The constant notifications, dings, and rings become what people rely on to break up their day or pass time. Some people even feel uneasy if they don’t have access to their phone for any reason. If you feel like your phone is ruining your life—or at least making it more stressful—consider taking a step back from it all. Notifications can be disabled, apps can be uninstalled, and everything can wait until later or tomorrow.

Digital Media
The internet has become a hotbed for sexual exploitation, human trafficking, and worse. Online communication is just as vulnerable to exploitation by predators as offline interactions. While there’s no way to make yourself completely safe online (or in real life for that matter), it’s important to understand how dangerous some interactions can be. As always, know who you’re talking to; steer clear of people who seem too friendly or overly generous with their personal information.

Internet Addiction
A Serious Threat to Modern Society : Have you ever wondered how many hours a day people actually spend on Facebook? How about their Instagram? While it may seem like just a harmless way to connect with friends, social media is quickly becoming an addiction for many modern individuals. Research shows that Facebook users are likely to feel more socially isolated and lonely than those who do not use social media as often.

Effects on Kids
The average American household contains three TVs and is within easy reach of a computer, smartphone, and game console. The constant barrage of information our children are exposed to on a daily basis can make it hard for them to focus and learn in school. As if that weren’t bad enough, overuse of technology by kids is starting to have physical effects as well—the demand on their eyes from staring at screens all day could lead to nearsightedness, or myopia.

Our Obsession with Social Media
Thanks to platforms like Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram, we have constant access to an infinite stream of information and entertainment. While it’s easy to get lost in these virtual realities, people are finding their happiness, mental health, and relationships suffering. Social media has a dark side that many people aren’t aware of—but it could be affecting your life more than you think. It’s time to tune into your real life again!
