Court Sentences 32 For Not Wearing Facemasks In Edo State Over COVID-19 Violation

The Chief Magistrate directed the convicts to carry out community services in line with the correctional centre of Non-custodian regulation.

32 people who violated the COVID-19 guidelines in Edo state have been sentenced to community services by a mobile court on Monday, March 1 for not wearing face masks.

The Edo government has made it mandatory for residents to wear face masks and obey other Covid-19 protocols in order to curb the spread of the virus.

The Prosecuting Counsel, Uyi Omoruyi, stated that the 32 people have been arrested inside Benin city and they pleaded responsible to the offence.

The Chief Magistrate, Rusberth Imafidon, directed the convicts to carry out network services in step with the Correctional Centre of Non-custodian regulation.

The punishment includes clearing drains, shrubs, selecting of trash, compulsory community sensitisation and grass slicing among others.

Mr. Imafidon noted that the offenders should be punished for 3 hours for two days to function a deterrent to other violators.

He, however, did no longer provide them the choice of a quality.

He ordered that correctional officers must supervise offenders throughout the punishment length.
