A Nigerian, Julia Oparah, has been named the provost and vice president of academic affairs at the University of San Francisco (USF) in the United States.
Mrs Oparah is currently the provost and dean of the faculty of Ethnic Studies at Mills College where she had served as a member of the faculty for almost 20 years before being named provost and dean of the faculty in 2017.
This was revealed by the President of USF, Paul J. Fitzgerald, on Thursday.
“Our community has identified a leader in higher education with extraordinary scholarly, administrative, and service credentials to lead USF as provost,” he said.
He said she can start her tenure on July 12.
Mr Fitzgerald stated he was overjoyed to welcome Mrs Oparah and her family to USF and that ”he looked ahead to running together with her as a companion in task whilst persevering with to construct at the planning and implementation that had taken place across the campus at some point of this hard 12 months of the COVID-19 pandemic”.
Also talking, the outgoing Interim Provost of USF who chaired the quest committee, Tyrone Cannon, stated Mrs Oparah ”rose to the pinnacle of a deep and prominent pool of candidates”.
“In both her scholarship and administrative selections, she has exhibited a deep commitment to collaboration and partnership, gender and racial fairness, worldwide social justice, and the transformative strength of education,” he stated.
Meanwhile, Mrs Oparah stated she turned into honoured and excited to serve the USF community as its next provost.

About the new Provost
Mrs Oparah commenced coaching at Mills College in 1997 as a traveling helping professor inside the Department of Ethnic Studies. She later have become companion professor inside the department from 2001 to 2006
Meanwhile, she become also Canada Research Chair in Social Justice, Equity and Diversity, and the Department of Social Work on the University of Toronto from 2004 to 2006.
From 2006 to the existing, she become a professor within the Department of Ethnic Studies at Mills College, where she has additionally been the chair of the department on the grounds that 2008.
She has additionally performed a primary role in establishing the Queer Studies Program at Mills.
