The Office of the National Security Adviser and the Minister of Digital Economy, Isa Ali Pantami, yesterday differed on the deployment of the Fifth Generation in Nigeria.

They spoke in Abuja at an investigative hearing on the status of 5G network in Nigeria, organized by Joint Senate Committee on Communications, Science and Technology, ICT & Cyber Crimes and Primary Healthcare and Communicable Diseases.

While Pantami said Nigeria was ready for the deployment of 5G; the ONSA expressed concerns about the deliberate vulnerabilities and backdoors within the network’s equipment.

ONSA Director of Communications, Bala Fakandu, stated: “We’re conscious that the deployment of 5G will include specific kinds of equipment and so we apprehend that the stakeholders within the telecommunications industry will make attempt to make certain that they improve their systems which will join up with the new generation.

“But we’re worried about the deliberate vulnerabilities and backdoors within the 5G network equipment. That’s one of the key issues we’ve and this will make the infrastructure highly vulnerable to eavesdropping, monitoring, cyber attacks, army and industrial espionage and different malicious sports through foreign actors.

“We urge the Honourble Minister to carry the workplace along in the improvement of the coverage so that we could have a strong framework to take care of this regions.”

Pantami said his ministry had performed the primary trial of 5G in Nigeria on twenty fifth September 2019 and was in the manner of compiling its final role.

“And most of compiled function will be part of my draft countrywide coverage with a purpose to be supplied on the Federal Executive Council.

“The radiation of microwave oven at domestic is more harmful than that of the 5G. The radiation of even the clever phone itself is even greater dangerous than that of 5G,” he introduced.

Senate President Ahmad Lawan stated the Senate might handiest approve the deployment of 5G network simplest if the safety and safety of the citizens are assured.
