Cristiano Ronaldo is a popular figure amidst celebrities. With so many awards and trophies, he is said to be one of the most successful footballers ever and he's regarded by so many as the GOAT (Greatest Of All Time). He currently plays for Juventus were he is still doing what he does best, breaking and setting records with Pele's record of total goals scored in club career being the latest he broke.
Some of the clubs he has previously played for are Sporting Lisbon (his childhood club), Manchester United (where he won his first Balón D'or), Juventus were he won numerous UEFA Champions League titles as well as several individual awards.
Also there has been series of rivalry between him and Lionel Messi. Both are regarded as the GOAT by their different supporters and this always sparks heated arguments between the two factions. Well whoever is the greatest isn't the purpose of this article, we'll let you decide that one, rather I'm just pointing out that Cristiano Ronaldo is one of the biggest names in football and at large.
Just so we know, Wayne Rooney who played with Cristiano Ronaldo at Manchester United during the period of 2004-2008 announced his retirement from football on the 15th of January, 2021. Rooney, who is also a successful footballer and one of Manchester United legends. He is currently their highest goal scorer as well as England's national team highest goal scorer. Rooney hung his professional boots yesterday and went into full time management. He was a player coach at Derby County prior to yesterday when he was made the permanent manager just as he announced his retirement.
Rooney's retirement sparked a lot of reactions on social media especially twitter with so many football fans congratulating him and sharing their thoughts. Recall that Wayne Rooney and Cristiano Ronaldo were both in the team that started the 2008 UCL Final for Manchester United which they went on to win after penalties. Football fans shared a picture of that starting XI, painting 10 players black and white with Ronaldo being the coloured one there.
What does this mean? It means that out of everyone that played the UCL Final, Cristiano Ronaldo is the only active player left, hence why we called him the last man standing. Here's a look at captions from other fans on twitter.
On the same day, another Portuguese matched Ronaldo's record in the PL. Bruno Fernandes the current Manchester United seems to be following the footsteps of the former United player Ronaldo as well his Portuguese national team mate. He [Bruno] became the first player in the history of the Premier League to win the POTM four times in a calendar year. He also matched Ronaldo's record of winning the award 4x in a premier league career. This is a massive achievement, kudos to Bruno Fernandes.
